Dan Ainsworth Based in Rye, East Sussex, Dan Ainsworth creates contemporary sculptures, sculptural furniture, lighting and functional objects that explore the relationship between form, material and space. Moving freely between disciplines and materials, his work combines sculptural expression with everyday function, resulting in objects that are both practical and playful.
After studying sculpture in Brighton, Dan has built a career spanning over twenty-five years in the creative industries, working across art, design, fashion, retail and hospitality alongside his independent artistic practice. His sculptural furniture and lighting pieces are available through McCully & Crane.
Dan's practice is rooted in experimentation and the physical process of making. Working across metal, wood, plaster and found or repurposed materials, ideas develop intuitively through drawing, cutting, welding, casting and assembling. Scale plays an important role, ranging from intimate objects and maquettes to large-scale sculptures and site-specific installations.
Central to his practice is a fascination with how shapes interact and influence one another, as well as how even abstract forms can evoke a sense of movement, character or the human body. Through playful compositions and unexpected combinations of materials, Dan explores the instinctive responses we have to objects and what makes a particular arrangement feel balanced, familiar or strangely unsettling.
Alongside original artworks, Dan also undertakes a select number of bespoke art and design commissions, spanning contemporary sculpture, sculptural furniture, lighting and interiors. Whether creating a one-off piece or a site-specific installation, each project is developed through a hands-on approach, with an emphasis on material exploration, thoughtful construction and enduring design.
